Changi Satay And BBQ Chicken Wings
At least twice a month, we would go to Changi Village to get our fix of satay and BBQ chicken wings.
Our favourite stall in the hawker centre is definitely Jason’s Place.
They share their stall with Kwong Satay, meaning we get a wider variety of food from this stall.
Kwong Satay and Jason’s Place have been at Changi Village for over 11 years.
Kwong Satay’s central kitchen is at Bukit Batok – where they manufacture and do wholesale distribution of satay and otah to almost 20 hawker stalls and eateries all over Singapore – and they also have an outlet in Geylang.
In the 1960’s, Mr Wong Chee Kwong peddled satay from a trishaw in the Katong area.
Using the same original Hainanese recipe as the one that Mr Kwong used in the 1960’s, their satay is outstanding.
We absolutely love their signature pork loin satay, and of course, their mutton, beef, chicken – and their recent addition, pork belly satay.
Their family’s traditional recipe combines Hainanese, Peranakan, and Indian influences in their marinate spice mix, as well as in their peanut sauce.
Lots of peanuts in their sauce, and they also add pineapple puree. Definitely nostalgic old school methods that keep drawing their regular customers back for more.
Their ketupat (rice cakes) are wrapped the traditional way – using Malay weaving methods. Certainly, none of that plastic wrapping that we see in other stalls where you taste the plastic and not the Nonya adaptation and Hainanese- influenced fragrance of the pandan leaves.
Serai (lemongrass), kunyit (turmeric), buah keras (candlenut), lengkwas (greater galangal), jintan puteh (cumin), jintan manis (fennel), cinnamon, star anise, nutmeg, shallots, garlic are some of the ingredients for their marinate spice mixture.
Their thick satay gravy comprises (lots of) peanuts, lemongrass, blue ginger, candlenuts, garlic, onions, and belachan (prawn paste, and dried shrimps).
The Peranakan-influenced grated pineapple is boiled with sugar, and adds a sweet, zesty dimension to the nutty peanut dipping saunce.
The heavenly BBQ chicken wings are also a must-have.
Moist, aromatic, smooth, tender meat, and crispy skin… the fragrance of quality well-glazed chicken wings rich in meat that have been carefully grilled over charcoal – without much burnt edges – lime juice drizzled over the expertly marinated sizzling hot chicken meat.
Using a secret recipe and then expertly barbequed for a smokey finish, the impressive texture and marinade ingredients bring out the lusciousness and enchantment of an ideal BBQ chicken wing.
Makes us hungry just thinking of the ones at Jason’s Place, so we are heading there again this evening, for our dinner.
