Creative Writing For Singaporean Students

There are at least 4 good reasons for us to write creatively:

  1. Creative Imagination

Imaginative writing will encourage us to use our creative minds and practice using our original and unique ideas. This will improve our abilities to come up with alternative ideas – which can be useful once we enter the workforce either as employees or as a boss, because in almost all career roles, the ability to analyze and solve problems (which requires creative thought and determination) is very important

  1. Express Our Feelings

We sometimes have difficulty in understanding and expressing how we feel about situations, people, and places. Creative writing can help us explore and examine our feelings better, when we organize and write down our thoughts, perspectives, and feelings

  1. Gain Self-Confidence

Creative writing gives us more opportunities to assert ourselves and our opinions, while developing our writing style. These developments will strengthen our confidence when we see how our literary works are starting to evolve and improve

  1. Communication Skills

Any well-written piece of creative writing involves a lot of planning, analysis, imagination, organization, and the use of different vocabulary to communicate and emphasize the thoughts of the writer. When you write creatively, you can present your thoughts while clearly convincing your reader about your point of view.

What is Creative Writing?

Creative writing focuses on character development, narrative, and plot, combining its structure with imagination and a good storyline.

Types Of Creative Writing

  1. Blogs, journals, memoirs, and diaries
  2. Poetry
  3. Song lyrics
  4. Plays, movie scripts, screenplays
  5. Personal essays/compositions/creative non-fiction
  6. Short fiction
  7. Letters and emails
  8. Novels
  9. Children’s books (fantasy, mystery, comedy)

Get Started With Creative Writing

Whether you are new to the art of Creative Writing, or an experienced nonfiction writer looking for new ideas of how to write innovatively, or a hobbyist creative writer wanting to become a published author, developing and fine-tuning your creative writing skills is important for your success.

Essential Elements of Creative Writing

You would want your reader to interact with what you have written, because when the reader finds your first few chapters to be engaging, he or she will continue reading the entire book or essay that you have composed.

You should therefore include:

Action

In creative writing, action is important because characters’ actions should be based on what they are motivated by, their perspectives, and their previous choices/behaviours.

The character’s actions should guide them toward their eventual goal in a way that is related to the main plot.

A character’s goals affect how you develop their character, and force this person to change and evolve depending on how you want events to be interspersed in your story.

Character

Character development gives a character a distinct personality, depth, and motivations that push and thrust them throughout a story.

Credible characters are unique and life-like.

Each of them have believable appearances, personalities, and a history that makes them relatable.

Conflict

Conflict moves your story forward.

If nothing is at stake or at risk, then your character’s choices do not matter much and the audience will start to get bored.

Conflict in a novel or short story is when the main character’s objectives clash with an internal or external obstacle.

This can cause the reader to feel frustrated and want to help the main character to overcome this obstacle.

Dialogue

This defines your characters’ voices, their speech patterns and communication styles, and reveals important information about these characters.

You would want to describe the inner emotions of your main characters, so that your reader can identify more closely with the problems and joys that the characters are experiencing.

Pace

The speed – how fast or how slow – of the story can determine how interesting the length and characteristic of a scene can be.

Generally, descriptive words slow down the pace, while dialogue and action scenes will speed things up.

Slowing down the pace at strategic moments in your story can also build suspense.

Plot

The plot is the sequence of events that create a story.

A plot begins at the start of your story with an incident or event that forces the main character to take action and start on a mission.

Conflict and tension happen throughout the plot, to keep the reader interested in what will happen next.

Successful plots include exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.

Point Of View

You must decide who is telling the story, and to whom you are telling the story.

You should choose between having a character who is involved in the story, or from the broad perspective that sees and knows all of the characters but is not one of the characters involved in your plot.

Scene

Scenes are the building blocks of your story.

The description of the scenes give the reader context of how the action unfolds within the scene or scenes.

You can choose to have many scenes, or just a single scene.

Good scenes contain tension and conflict, so that the plot is kept exciting.

Setting

The time, location, and physical environment is the setting of the story.

A setting can be a specific real geographical location, a historical period, a future world/time, or a fictional location or world.

Tension

Tension should exist between characters, in order to build suspense.

Theme

The theme of a story is a broad conceptual philosophy that you want to convey through your work.

For example, you might want to describe the hardships and friendships of farmers, or what challenges pilots go through when they train for their roles

Tips And Helpful Hints for Creative Writers

These can help boost your creativity and the way you write:

  1. Write constantly. Each time you have a random idea, write it down before you forget what it is. Even bad ideas can inspire good ones, and you never know what will trigger further inspiration for a better idea
  2. Rewrite several times. A good writer usually does not get it right in the first draft. Storytelling and wordbuilding take a lot of time and thought, and it is through a willingness to rewrite that you will be able to craft a version that works the best
  3. Have a perspective. Use your own unique writing style to tell a story that connects with your readers in a way that can leave a lasting impression. Memorable stories often has a strong story, message, or lesson to share – and tells the audience why they should care
  4. Know your audience. It is rare for a story to appeal to all demographics, so you should decide from the start if you are reaching out to students, youth, or the adult market. This will help you be more focused in ways that appeal to your target audience
  5. Read a lot. Read famous works by successful writers across different genres, and see which aspects of those stories grab your attention the most. Use relevant techniques in your own style of writing
  6. Start writing. Don’t feel intimidated or shy about your creative work, and where your imagination takes you. Practice using freewriting, creative writing exercises. Through these practices, you can improve your own writing skills to become a better writer
  7. Join a writer’s group. Through meeting other writers, they can offer constructive feedback on your story, main characters, setting, and choice of words. A writer’s group can offer helpful suggestions or inspiration – whether you are writing your first book, or are an experienced writer who is having writer’s block
  8. Use literary devices. They help you to write vividly and create imaginative scenes. Similes, metaphors, alliterations, consonance, assonance, and other figures of speech create impactful images that can boost your creativity and assist in painting powerful pictures

You can be a successful creative writer.

Hire Qualified & Experienced Private Tuition Teachers To Help You Gain Marks

Eg: Secondary 2 Math
Eg 2 hours each session, twice a week, Mondays anytime from 4pm to 7pm etc
The majority of tutors in Singapore currently prefer to conduct online lessons. Thus, if you are OK with lessons being held online, it is likely that there will be more experienced tutors who apply for your assignment.
SINGAPORE’S LEADING PRIVATE TUITION AGENCY

HOW DO I REQUEST FOR A TUTOR?

You can request for a tutor by submitting our online Request Form.

Upon receiving your request, we will Whatsapp you to discuss your child’s academic needs. We will spend the next few hours shortlisting several suitable tutors within our database and network for your consideration.

Our working hours are from 9am to 9pm, seven days a week.

Tuition usually commences within one week after you have selected a tutor.

TRIAL LESSON

The paid trial lessons can be 1.5 hours or 2 hours per session.

CAN I CHANGE THE TUTOR AFTER THE TUITION BEGINS?

You just need to pay for the tuition session(s) that have been conducted. There will not be any extra charges for the change.

AM I ABLE TO VIEW THE TUTOR’S CERTIFICATES BEFORE THE FIRST LESSON?

You can request to see the hardcopies of certificates of your tutor to be presented to you during the first lesson.

The client acknowledges that it is his/her responsibility to verify the suitability, credentials and qualifications of any tutor with whom he/she engages.

HOW MUCH DO I PAY FOR YOUR TUTOR MATCHING SERVICES?

Top Tutors is Singapore’s leading private tuition agency and our matching service is free for students/parents requesting for tutors. This is because our agency commission is charged to the tutor, not to you.

The client will pay to Top Tutors half of the fees payable in the first 4 calendar weeks. This amount is the commission to Top Tutors for matching the tutor to the client, and will be borne by the tutor.

Thereafter, the client will pay the tuition fees directly to the tutor.

If lessons are postponed during the first two weeks, the commission payable to Top Tutors will be based on the tuition session conducted the subsequent week(s).

The tutor shall collect all fees due to the tutor from the parent after the two weeks. Top Tutors will not assist in any recovery of fees.

PAYMENT OF FEES

The client is required to pay tuition fees only for the number of hours of lessons given by the tutor.

If you decide to stop the tuition after the first lesson, you are required to pay for only that lesson.

Please transfer the fee for that lesson to Top Tutors and we will transfer the tutor’s fee to him/her.

Tutors are not authorized at any time to collect the payment on Top Tutors’s behalf.

Tuition fees are to be paid every 4 weeks to the tutor, unless otherwise agreed between the client and the tutor.

PAYMENT MODE

We will provide our bank account information for you to make payment via internet banking or ATM transfer directly to Top Tutors’s bank account.

If the client fails to pay us, Top Tutors reserves the right to terminate the Assignment. This is in fairness to the tutor, who might need to give the available slot to another client if this Assignment does not materialize.

Once the payment is received, it will be acknowledged in the form of a receipt, issued to the payer (Parent/Requestor/Guardian) via Whatsapp, sms, email or other electronic communications medium. We will also provide details of the Tuition Assignment that can include: tutor’s name, hourly fee, date of commencement of tuition, subject(s), level, duration of each lesson and frequency, etc.

FIRST LESSON

Once the client accepts the tutor’s candidacy, the client will not be able to change the schedule of the First Lesson.

Clients are allowed to make changes in the schedule after the First Lesson is over. However, Top Tutors hopes that this is not necessary as the tutor has already reserved that slot of time for you.

If you want to make changes in the schedule, please consult with your tutor to ask if he/she is able to change the schedule or not.

The tutor is to bring his/her identity document, academic transcripts/certificates and relevant documents for the First Lesson for verification purposes.

If the tutor is unable to conduct the First Lesson of a tuition assignment, the tutor must call Top Tutors at least 3 business days before the actual lesson. If the tutor fails to notify Top Tutors of his/her cancellation/postponement, an administrative charge of S$30 will be imposed on him/her.

If the tutor fails to contact Top Tutors with a valid reason to inform us about the tutor’s absence from the lesson, the tutor’s profile at Top Tutors may be blacklisted. This will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

LOCATION OF TUTORING LESSONS

Tutors will conduct lessons at the student’s residence unless otherwise specified and agreed upon by both the client and the tutor.

If the client has a request for the tuition to be conducted at another location (eg a friend’s home), Top Tutors will ask if the tutor is able to accommodate the request.

Top Tutors and the tutor will not be responsible if the given location is occupied or not available for use for the lessons and the officially scheduled timings will still be counted as a paid lesson.

TUTOR REASSIGNMENT OR CANCELLATION OF ASSIGNMENTS

There is no obligation or contract to complete a fixed number of lessons, except for the First Lesson.

If at any time the client is not satisfied with the tutor, the client may request a replacement or termination. However, the client is responsible for paying the fee for the number of lessons given prior to termination.

Top Tutors will discuss separately with the client and the tutor regarding future tuition arrangements, and Top Tutors will change the tutor for the client. There will not be any extra charges for the change and the client needs to pay just for the tuition session(s) that have been conducted.

If the client cancels a tutoring assignment before the tutor completes the agreed number of lessons for the first 4 calendar weeks, Top Tutors assumes full claim to 50% of the tuition fees for the total number of lessons delivered in the month. For example, if the client had requested for 8 lessons per month, but the assignment was cancelled after the 5th session, Top Tutors will be paid pro-rated commission for the 5 lessons conducted.

Top Tutors will not be liable for any payment charges or issues arising from the cancellation of tuition assignments by the client.

If the client terminates the Assignment because the tutor is often late, skips lessons without valid explanations etc, the tutor will bear Top Tutors’s full commission fee.

If the tutor cancels the Assignment after confirming acceptance (that is, the client’s contact information and address have been given to the tutor), the tutor will need to compensate the commission which amounts to 50% of the fees payable (as stated in the confirmation Whatsapp, sms, email or other forms of electronic communications messages) for the first 4 weeks.

If the tutor wishes to cancel a Tuition Assignment before the end of the first 4 calendar weeks, the tutor is to inform both Top Tutors as well as the client at least 3 days before the next lesson date. Top Tutors will recover our legal share of the one-time commission of 50% of the fee for the first 4 calendar weeks from the tutor. Tutors are encouraged to have a long-term commitment as the clients have vested their trust in them.

TERMINATION

The tutor will receive full or pro-rated payment for the number of lessons rendered, provided the tutor has complied with the Terms of this Agreement.

The client has the right to terminate the tuition if the tutor is unable to produce the documents certifying his/her credentials. In such cases, the tutor has to pay Top Tutors the amount of money equivalent to the tuition fee for the day, as commission.
