Creative Writing For Singaporean Students
There are at least 4 good reasons for us to write creatively:
- Creative Imagination
Imaginative writing will encourage us to use our creative minds and practice using our original and unique ideas. This will improve our abilities to come up with alternative ideas – which can be useful once we enter the workforce either as employees or as a boss, because in almost all career roles, the ability to analyze and solve problems (which requires creative thought and determination) is very important
- Express Our Feelings
We sometimes have difficulty in understanding and expressing how we feel about situations, people, and places. Creative writing can help us explore and examine our feelings better, when we organize and write down our thoughts, perspectives, and feelings
- Gain Self-Confidence
Creative writing gives us more opportunities to assert ourselves and our opinions, while developing our writing style. These developments will strengthen our confidence when we see how our literary works are starting to evolve and improve
- Communication Skills
Any well-written piece of creative writing involves a lot of planning, analysis, imagination, organization, and the use of different vocabulary to communicate and emphasize the thoughts of the writer. When you write creatively, you can present your thoughts while clearly convincing your reader about your point of view.

Get Started With Creative Writing
Whether you are new to the art of Creative Writing, or an experienced nonfiction writer looking for new ideas of how to write innovatively, or a hobbyist creative writer wanting to become a published author, developing and fine-tuning your creative writing skills is important for your success.
Essential Elements of Creative Writing
You would want your reader to interact with what you have written, because when the reader finds your first few chapters to be engaging, he or she will continue reading the entire book or essay that you have composed.
You should therefore include:
Action
In creative writing, action is important because characters’ actions should be based on what they are motivated by, their perspectives, and their previous choices/behaviours.
The character’s actions should guide them toward their eventual goal in a way that is related to the main plot.
A character’s goals affect how you develop their character, and force this person to change and evolve depending on how you want events to be interspersed in your story.
Character
Character development gives a character a distinct personality, depth, and motivations that push and thrust them throughout a story.
Credible characters are unique and life-like.
Each of them have believable appearances, personalities, and a history that makes them relatable.
Conflict
Conflict moves your story forward.
If nothing is at stake or at risk, then your character’s choices do not matter much and the audience will start to get bored.
Conflict in a novel or short story is when the main character’s objectives clash with an internal or external obstacle.
This can cause the reader to feel frustrated and want to help the main character to overcome this obstacle.
Dialogue
This defines your characters’ voices, their speech patterns and communication styles, and reveals important information about these characters.
You would want to describe the inner emotions of your main characters, so that your reader can identify more closely with the problems and joys that the characters are experiencing.
Pace
The speed – how fast or how slow – of the story can determine how interesting the length and characteristic of a scene can be.
Generally, descriptive words slow down the pace, while dialogue and action scenes will speed things up.
Slowing down the pace at strategic moments in your story can also build suspense.
Plot
The plot is the sequence of events that create a story.
A plot begins at the start of your story with an incident or event that forces the main character to take action and start on a mission.
Conflict and tension happen throughout the plot, to keep the reader interested in what will happen next.
Successful plots include exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.
Point Of View
You must decide who is telling the story, and to whom you are telling the story.
You should choose between having a character who is involved in the story, or from the broad perspective that sees and knows all of the characters but is not one of the characters involved in your plot.
Scene
Scenes are the building blocks of your story.
The description of the scenes give the reader context of how the action unfolds within the scene or scenes.
You can choose to have many scenes, or just a single scene.
Good scenes contain tension and conflict, so that the plot is kept exciting.
Setting
The time, location, and physical environment is the setting of the story.
A setting can be a specific real geographical location, a historical period, a future world/time, or a fictional location or world.
Tension
Tension should exist between characters, in order to build suspense.
Theme
The theme of a story is a broad conceptual philosophy that you want to convey through your work.
For example, you might want to describe the hardships and friendships of farmers, or what challenges pilots go through when they train for their roles
Tips And Helpful Hints for Creative Writers
These can help boost your creativity and the way you write:
- Write constantly. Each time you have a random idea, write it down before you forget what it is. Even bad ideas can inspire good ones, and you never know what will trigger further inspiration for a better idea
- Rewrite several times. A good writer usually does not get it right in the first draft. Storytelling and wordbuilding take a lot of time and thought, and it is through a willingness to rewrite that you will be able to craft a version that works the best
- Have a perspective. Use your own unique writing style to tell a story that connects with your readers in a way that can leave a lasting impression. Memorable stories often has a strong story, message, or lesson to share – and tells the audience why they should care
- Know your audience. It is rare for a story to appeal to all demographics, so you should decide from the start if you are reaching out to students, youth, or the adult market. This will help you be more focused in ways that appeal to your target audience
- Read a lot. Read famous works by successful writers across different genres, and see which aspects of those stories grab your attention the most. Use relevant techniques in your own style of writing
- Start writing. Don’t feel intimidated or shy about your creative work, and where your imagination takes you. Practice using freewriting, creative writing exercises. Through these practices, you can improve your own writing skills to become a better writer
- Join a writer’s group. Through meeting other writers, they can offer constructive feedback on your story, main characters, setting, and choice of words. A writer’s group can offer helpful suggestions or inspiration – whether you are writing your first book, or are an experienced writer who is having writer’s block
- Use literary devices. They help you to write vividly and create imaginative scenes. Similes, metaphors, alliterations, consonance, assonance, and other figures of speech create impactful images that can boost your creativity and assist in painting powerful pictures
